The nine Muses were goddesses who dedicated their lives to the arts and sciences.They sat near the throne of Zeus, and their choir, led by Apollo, the god of music, sang of the god's greatness, of the origin of the world and of the glorious deeds of the great heroes. At times they would teach mortals the gifts of song, poetry healing and prophesy.
